29: Notes To Self

1,000 Page Human History, Energy & Quality of Life, Money's Function, Indispensable Man, Spurs Ball Movement

Yo, it’s Luke!

I’m hosting a founder retreat w/ my buddy Aidan this weekend (I’m hyped). $150 to hangout with 20 UIUC killers in a cabin w/ 20 acres of land & a private lake? Automatic.

That said, here is your weekly dose of 5 noteworthy ideas & things I learned about last week. Click on each link to dive further on that topic.

Imagine human history were written in a big 1,000-page book. Every page would cover 250 years.

If we tore out all the pages, it would look like this. The very earliest permanent settlements started around page 760 and recorded history doesn't start until around page 775 🤯

2. Energy Consumption and Quality of Life (United Nations)

This is a fun one to study. If you look at it long enough, questions start to pop up. Like…

  • Why does Iceland use so much energy?

  • What does 0.3 kg of oil / capita look & feel like? That seems like the golden threshold for a developed country (& thus a much higher quality of life)?

  • What are the highest ROI projects to help countries like Ethiopia?

  • You can bet humans are not hopping off oil consumption anytime soon. There’s a lot of countries still at the far left side. How much of that energy consumption can we supplement with cleaner resources?

This was a fun (& thought provoking) read about money & its function in society and your life. Worth the 3 minutes, but here’s my favorite snip:

  • Money doesn’t make you happy? No, it doesn’t but it does give you choices. Money doesn’t care about you. The more money you have the more problems that you have? Only if you don’t manage your money properly. It helps you become happier due to increased autonomy. The key issue is in having no emotion towards money and having a level of indifference to it. But, you must understand why it exists and what it’s function in society is.

A nice poem on our insignificance.

5. San Antonio Spurs Tribute of Highlights

For all of my fellow basketball purists out there, this one is for you.

(classical music) x (highlights of the Spurs playing team basketball) = poetry in motion
