37: Notes To Self

Winter Home, 2 Recruiting Strats, Peloton Music, Gifts for Parents, Global Internet Use

Yo, it’s Luke!

I’m thinking about living in South America (Medellin or Buenos Aires) for a few months during the winter. Hit my line if you’ve ever done that. I have no idea what I’m doing.

That said, here is your weekly dose of 5 noteworthy ideas & things I learned about last week. Click on each link to dive further on that topic.

1. Now This Is One Helluva House

I recently wrote this post explaining how I got my dream gig working under Julian. 2 of my other friends have also gotten dream gigs using these tactics.

For examples and detail you can read the post. But here’s the gist of what I said:

  • Be a permissionless apprentice. Find a person or company you admire and start helping them with no expectation of anything in return. Spend at least 10 quality hours before quitting. If you’re a designer, re-design their product. If you’re an investor, analyze companies. You get the idea. Do the job before you get the job. Worst comes to worst, you did a project that forced you to develop a skillset you already wanted to develop.

  • Befriend “Future Me’s”. When recruiting, you deal with a lot of uncertainty. You take (educated) guesses on your career path and method of execution. The thing is you can make better guesses if you know people a few steps ahead of you. They deeply understand what you need to do to get where you want to go (& if you should do it in the first place) Because they just did it themselves! So reach out. Make sure to give more than you take, and never keep score. That’s how the best relationships form.

Fees from music playing on Peloton are “a top 10 account for pretty much all major record labels right now.”

Huh, would’ve never thought that.

I love articles like this. It was a list of things any kid can do for their parents as they get older. Starting with the lowest cost/effort…going up to high cost/high effort:

Low Cost / Low Effort:

  • Randomly call them. Trading 10 minutes of social media for 10 minutes of facetime with your parents is possibly the highest +EV trade you can make.

  • Send a pic of what you’re working on. You know how when you’re a kid and you draw a squiggle on a paper and show it to your parents and they say OHMAHGOSHH ITS SO GOOD!! That actually never stops. You can always just show your parents what “you did at school today”.

Medium Cost / Medium Effort

  • Spoil them. Your parents spoiled you, now it’s your turn to spoil them. Buy them movie tickets every month, get flowers delivered, send them a gift card to their favorite store

  • Calcium CT Scan. One of the most common causes of death is heart attacks, and apparently these calcium scans are great for early detection of blockages. They cost ~$250.

High Cost / High Effort

  • Get them a trainer. As you age, your body fails. Hips, knees, back pain etc. When you have pain, you move less. When you move less, you age faster. The faster you age, the faster you die.

  • Book them a Vacation. Happy families tend go on vacation.

  • Paying off their debt / mortgage. Big time.

Low Cost / High Effort

  • Record a podcast for each parent. Record a 2 hour podcast. Just for you and your family. Ask a bunch of questions about their life growing up, the adversity they had, different ‘fork in the road’ moments for them, their hopes and dreams for you, etc..

  • Lastly, the thing they want the most….Stop Sabotaging Yourself. More than buying them stuff, or traveling, giving them grandkids or calling them – was just letting them be at peace because they know you’re going in the right direction.

37% of the world’s population, 2.9 billion people, have never used the Internet.

We’re still early in so many ways. Exciting times ahead!

Thanks for wanting to know more today than you did yesterday! If you liked this edition, send it over to a friend who would like it too 🤝
