9: Notes To Self

1971, Term Limits, Regulatory Capture, Status Games, Hero Flips

Yo!

Here is your weekly dose of 5 things I’m pondering and exploring.

I stumbled across this website and it was a slap in the face. A necessary reminder that America is not all dandelions and roses. Since 1971, many Americans started getting locked out of the benefits capitalism. For example…

  • Income growth of top 1% skyrocketed and bottom 90% stagnated.

  • A relentless 50-year decline in wages’ share of the economy’s total income began.

  • Average black income as % of average white income stagnated to little or no progress.

  • Many levers of capitalism began breaking down.

In essence, the US government dropped the ball on maintaining a strong economy. And you can see the long-term effects in today’s more polarized & depressed society. But how? What did we do to mess up this bad?

Give me term limits or give me death!

If you’re interested in innovation and plan to live in The States, you gotta watch this talk. For real, click the link and watch it at your next meal.

Bill Gurley (one of the GOAT Silicon Valley investors) sounds off on some systemic government & regulatory issues. Congressmen getting paid off, too much regulatory capture leading to higher prices (see graph), etc. I hope some of you reading this can join me in re-aligning government incentive structures and mechanisms to make it more robust and beneficial to society.

We’ve certainly got our work cut out for us.

“One of the costliest things you can do with your life is opt into a game where the status competition is judged by people who you don't actually want to be friends with.”

Nothing like some mimetic desire to steer you away from what you actually want. What do you say we all fight the good fight against our tribe-approval-wanting-monkey-minds and try our best to live an original, authentic life? Or at least surround ourselves with tribes that are aligned with the life we want?

This dude casually does gainers off of roofs. It’s ridiculous. All of his videos are incredible.

Thanks for wanting to know more today than you did yesterday!

Cheers,

Luke
