Yo, it’s Luke!
The big update is that I started a company / community, called The Growth Junto. Since I don’t like email, I get a comical # of texts each day… so sry if I’m delayed on responding! (feel free to double text)
That said, here is your weekly dose of 5 noteworthy ideas & things I learned about last week. Click on the brown links to dive further on that topic.
1. Found some old national geographic magazine photos… so good

My conversation goals w/ the homies:
“There are also people around whom your thoughts behave differently. You offer them something half-formed, and instead of becoming more defensible, it grows larger. They don’t immediately ask whether it is true, fundable, rigorous, feasible, sensible etc. Most people evaluate an idea at exactly the moment it most needs extension. Even praise can close it down: that’s a great idea turns a living thing into an object already finished enough to judge.”
This guy wrote this essay about how his wife helped their children become great conversationalists with these small habits… I loved it. Def going to copy when I have kiddos. Here are some good tidbits:
“When our children were young and we had guests coming for dinner, my wife would have each of our kids prep a question. She would help them think about who was coming, what they might know, what might be interesting to ask. She also kept a box of 3x5 cards on the table. Handwritten questions, worn at the edges. When conversation needed a spark, one of our kids would draw a card and prompt the table. ‘What was your best vacation?” “What animal would you want to be for a day?’”
“When it was just our family at dinner, the practice shifted. Instead of a question, everyone had to tell a story. Or prepare a joke. The story had to go somewhere. (If it didn’t they’d hear about it. We were developing roast comics with thick skin without even realizing it). The joke had to have a punchline. If it wasn’t funny, we’d workshop it right there. My wife always said that no child of hers would have bad comedic timing.”
“On birthdays and Mother’s Day, the practice changed again. Each child had to say something they loved about the person being honored. Specifically. Not ‘she’s nice.’ Something true. Something particular.”
4. I don’t know who said this but I like it (maybe it was me? wrote it down one day… anyways a good thought nonetheless)
“when you hit rock bottom in life, you’ll only be left with 2 thing:
the integrity of your word
the strength of your relationships
so never tarnish your word, and always invest in your relationships - because in the end, it’s all we really have.”
5. Fall In Love
Just another reminder that James Clear is THAT GUY when it comes to wisdom of humans x craft:
“if you want to become significantly better at anything, you have to fall in love with the process of doing it. you have to fall in love with building the identity of someone who does the work, rather than merely dreaming about the results that you want.”
Thanks for wanting to know more today than you did yesterday! If you liked this edition, send it over to a friend who would like it too 🤝
Cheers,
